“And so it is that Vignarionda is a cru with its own story. It is not comparable with the other crus of Serralunga. Its Barolos, although very structured, are among the most harmonious and balanced of all, wines that express the cru’s own style. Richly endowed with notes of sour red cherry and red roses when young, over time the Vignarionda Barolos develop aromas of dark fruit intertwined with anise and liquorice, with notes of undergrowth and white truffle.”

“We have been professionally rating Barolos since the early 2000s and drinking them for a lot longer, and we can’t think of a better time than now to buy and drink the king of Italian wines. The dynamic duo of the 2016 and 2015 vintages have just arrived in the market and they deliver hundreds of great bottles. The superb 2015 vintage produced fantastically rich and fruity wines with a complement of ripe tannins thanks to a hot growing season, while the 2016 vintage may prove to be even better, with the same rich fruit but an additional structural dimension of tannins and acidity making these classic wines approachable now, but guaranteeing a long life in your cellar. […] we’ve chosen 100 outstanding Barolos [among which Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda 2013 and Barolo Parafada 2015 from Massolino, ed.] from tastings over the last three years. As well as plenty of 2015s and 2016s to choose from, our list includes some late releases from the classic 2010 vintage, as well as a handful of wines from intervening vintages.”

Dolcetto d’Alba 2018

– Matthew Jukes

2013 Massolino, Barolo DOCG, Piedmont, Italy.

“Tucked between the legendary and tight 2010 and the exceptional 2016 vintages, these 2013s are not getting the credit they deserve and are proving to be absolutely delicious Barolo and outstanding drinkers, especially wines like this basic Massolino Barolo, which is quite impressive and opening up nicely with classic Nebbiolo highlights and depth of flavors.” […]

Notes on two examples of Massolino single vineyard Barolo from the outstanding 2016 vintage that are just now entering the market:

Massolino Barolo Parussi 2016 – From the vineyard in Castiglione Falletto. Bright, young garnet; aromas of morel cherry, oregano and a hint of orange peel. Medium-full with excellent concentration. This is quite rich on the palate and is tightly packed with medium-full tannins, good acidity and subtle wood notes. This has the strucure and depth of fruit to age well, with peak dinking in 15-20 years. Another year in the bottle will soften the tannins a bit. Very impressive wine, with notable complexity. Outstanding

Massolino Barolo Margheria 2016 – From one of the estate vineyards of Massolino in Serralunga d’Alba. Delicate young garnet; aromas of morel cherry, orange peel, and hints of strawberry and red poppy. Medium-full, this has beautifully ripe fruit, notable concentration, elegant tannins of medium-weight, very good acidity and excelllent persistence. This is a Serralunga Barolo with inner weight, but an round, charming exterior. Beautiful harmony, impeccable varietal purity and lovely charm and finesse. All the elements are here and are peeking out a bit, and with another 3-5 years, all of the beauty of this wine will be evident, with peak drinking in 12-15 years, perhaps longer. Superb
