Barolo and Barbaresco are probably the two Italian wine regions most beloved by Italian wine enthusiasts. However, this hasn’t always been the case. Fifty years ago, this part of Piedmont was not exactly unknown, but it certainly wasn’t overrun with visitors. Moreover, the wines were often difficult to approach without significant aging: after all, Nebbiolo is not a grape to be taken lightly. […]

[…] Massolino, Vigna Rionda Riserva, Serralunga d’Alba 2002 94
Massolino produced small amounts of the estate’s three Serralunga cru bottlings in 2002, including this Riserva. Despite a crumbly, hard to extract cork, the wine surged from the bottle with a flood of emotion, so penetrating were the aromas – including dried cherry, smoky tobacco, hazelnuts and polished antiques. Mature but not oxidised, this is midweight yet by no means diluted, nor are the tannins feeble. A steely backbone makes for a vertical wine with plenty of acid bite. Having traveled to the Barolo production zone since 2001, and having walked through and photographed many of the most famous vineyards with the most renowned producers, Barolo has become a major passion for me, and is a focal point of my wine studies.

[…] I’m not ranking these producers for one simple reason – it’s pointless. How do you determine that my number 14 selection is better than my number 15? Why is Barolo number 3 better than 4, and so on. Thus I’ll list them in alphabetical order. Any producer listed among the top 25 Barolo is an outstanding producer.

“Family affairs
What was very obvious during our stay was the importance of family. All of the wineries (…) we visited are still family affairs. (…)

At Massolino in Serralunga d’Alba the many visitors cannot fail to be aware of the Massolino family’s progression from peasant farmer, the current generation’s great-grandfather Giovanni, scratching a living from the soil in 1896. (…)”
