Rionda, vigna da leggenda

Mauro Carosso, Vitae Magazine, December 2017, n. 15

“The Vigna Rionda is definitely part of the Lequio Formation, which represents the link between the Alta Langa Formations and the hills of Alba, featuring characters in common with these two areas. It shows rare layers of Langa Stone, cemented sandstones used as building material, and thin layers of sand alternated to white marl typical of the first one, besides the prevalence of marl, rather than sand, typical of the more recent formations of the second one. Hence, the sandy part of the soil grants a fast water drain, precluding to the vines a lush growth. On the other hand, the clay component of the marl holds a good water reserve, allowing the vine to ripen even in dry vintages.”

“The Winery of the family Massolino was established at the end of 1800 and takes the name from the prestigious vineyard which they own in large part. A privilege and pride for Franco and Roberto, making a meticulous work to enhance this great vineyard, as well as the other ones in Parussi [Castiglione Falletto, t.n.], Parafada and Margheria, true crus of Serralunga d’Alba.

The vigilant custodian of the family’s history is Renato, Franco and Robert’s uncle, an authentic vigneron, with great sensitivity and humanity. The time we spent with him gave us the possibility to deepen the  knowledge of an important part of the story of Serralunga d’Alba and of the people who contributed to the success of Barolo.

Their philosophy is simple: respecting the traits of each vineyard and preserving the personality of the grape variety in the glass, keeping up to date with new and innovative technologies, but walking on the path of tradition.”

Barolo Vigna Rionda Riserva 2008

Strikes right away with its rich, bright garnet shade. The nose is full, perfumed and austere; despite the long ageing, it still has some hidden potential. Dried flowers, violet and gentian, developing into a spicy side made up of liquorice, cloves, cinnamon, blond tobacco and voluptuous ethereal evolution. The balsamic hint is the key trait of this vintage, marking the palate, too, rich and powerful, with clear references to the nose. Persistent and balanced, with ripe and tasty tannins. Ages in big casks.”
